The University of Michigan and embattled athletic director Warde Manuel have agreed to a buyout of the remaining years on his contract and he will step down at the end of the year, culminating a decade-long run with four national championships and a string of scandals. The school said Monday the decision was tied to investigations into former football coach Sherrone Moore's relationship with his executive assistant and a probe […]

New Virginia Tech coach James Franklin knows the Hokies' proud history going back to the Frank Beamer era. Annual bowl bids. A trip to the national championship game. Special teams play so reliably good that it spawned the name "Beamer Ball," and the beaten-up metal lunch pail symbolizing a blue-collar defensive ethic. "You guys all remember that Virginia Tech," Franklin said Thursday, "but none of the current players do." That […]

The Miami Hurricanes are back on the national scene in college football in large part due to the acquisition of two high-profile transfer quarterbacks the past two years. They're counting on a third, Darian Mensah from Duke, to keep them in the conversation. The junior redshirt quarterback said Wednesday he made the move to Miami largely because of the success Cam Ward and Carson Beck experienced after joining the Hurricanes […]

SMU has launched a Heisman Trophy campaign for senior quarterback Kevin Jennings, and also is putting his name on a new recovery center in the school's football complex. The third-year hometown starting quarterback, who led the Mustangs to the College Football Playoff two seasons ago, is believed to be the first player to have an area on any campus named for him while still active in his college career. "When […]

The Atlantic Coast Conference is revamping the tiebreaker format for its football championship game following a controversial finish last season that allowed a five-loss Duke team to get in over then-No. 10-ranked Miami — a situation that put the Hurricanes at risk of missing the expanded College Football Playoff. Miami, which had been the ACC's most dominant team during the regular season, wound up being selected for the playoff and […]

New Wisconsin athletic director Shawn Eichorst, who spent the last eight years at Texas, believes his new and old schools have much in common. Both are well-regarded research universities in state capitals that belong to major conferences and have relatively similar enrollments. He also pointed out one difference. "There’s swag at Texas, right?" Eichorst said Tuesday during his introductory news conference. "There’s 30 million people in Texas. We’ve got swag, […]

The largest turnover of Big 12 head coaches in seven seasons includes two first-timers at their alma maters, a national championship winner and another who last season almost got a Group of Five team into the College Football Playoff. "I grew up a Big 12 kid," new Kansas State coach Collin Klein said Wednesday. "And being able to be part of this conference as a fan, as a player, as […]

Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire said it has been business as usual in the football operation through the turmoil surrounding the Brendan Sorsby gambling saga. The 54-year-old Texas native credited the school's leadership and boosters when asked at Big 12 media days on Tuesday how he has managed an offseason he couldn't have imagined in his younger coaching days. "We’ve all been in this together," McGuire said. "I have good […]

The NCAA wants to know what the University of Cincinnati knew about former quarterback Brendan Sorsby and his gambling issues during his two seasons with the program. According to reports by multiple media outlets, the NCAA has sent an official letter of inquiry to the school regarding Sorsby, who was ruled permanently ineligible by the NCAA in April after he placed thousands of impermissible sports bets over the past four […]
